About ILGARD
Overview
The Institute for Local Government Administration and Rural
Development (ILGARD) turns Ohio University's expertise into
real-world assistance for Southeast Ohio and the State. The
institute provides applied research and technical assistance
to government and development organizations and serves as
a public service learning laboratory for Ohio University students.
Since 1981, ILGARD's public affairs mission
has been to:
-
Improve the performance, innovation, and efficiency of
government;
-
Serve as an applied research center for state, regional
and local policy issues;
-
Provide information and technology services for increased
regional competitiveness; and
-
Involve undergraduate and graduate students in public
service projects.
ILGARD is a member institution of the Ohio Board of Regents'
Rural Universities Program (RUP) created by the Ohio General
Assembly in 1985. The RUP includes Miami University and Bowling
Green State University, with Ohio University serving as the
coordinating institution.
RUP enhances the quality of information and education available
to state and local governments and development organizations.
RUP activities allow governments and development organizations
to more efficiently manage and deliver quality services to
their communities and realize cost savings in multi-jurisdictional
projects.

"Ohio University's involvement in regional economic development ... presents a multitude of opportunities for the University to press ahead in some very important areas. In fact, two of our primary goals, those of increasing the University's partnerships and expanding its base of financial support, rely heavily on the success of initiatives that also benefit the Appalachian Ohio economy. I am proud of the University's endeavors in this work. Our faculty, staff and students are heavily involved in providing services and support for area businesses, entrepreneurs, local governments and state and community agencies. The Voinovich Center for Leadership and Public Affairs, one of our biggest assets in these efforts, also provides students with amazing academic opportunities and the ability to see firsthand the outcomes possible when shared visions are realized."
