and EPA plans to award 100 grants. The grants will fund eligible

Five Star Restoration Grant Program
(EPA/National Fish and Wildlife Foundation)
The Five Star Restoration Grant Program provides modest
financial assistance for "on-the-ground" community-based
wetland, riparian and coastal habitat restoration projects.
Ideally, the project should involve diverse partnerships of
five organizations or more that contribute funding, land,
technical assistance, workforce support and/or other in-kind
services. Deadline is March 1, 2002. For details and application,
see http://nfwf.org/programs/5star-rfp.htm.
Brownfields Assessment Demonstration Pilots (EPA/OSWER)
This program is designed to empower states, communities and
other stakeholders in economic redevelopment to work together
to prevent, assess, safely cleanup and reuse brownfields in
a sustainable manner. For details, contact the Superfund Hotline
at 800.424.9346. Visit http://www.epa.gov/swerosps/bf/html-doc/contacts.htm
to identify your EPA regional brownfield coordinator.
Flood Hazard Mitigation and Riverine Ecosystem Restoration
Program (Army Corps of Engineers)
Informally known as Challenge 21, this watershed-based program
focuses on identifying sustainable solutions to flooding problems
by examining non-structural solutions in flood-prone areas,
while retaining traditional measures where appropriate. The
program will create a framework for more effective federal
coordination of flood programs and will create partnerships
with communities to develop solutions to flooding problems.
Eligible projects will meet the dual purpose of flood hazard
mitigation and riverine ecosystem restoration. Contact: Army
Corps of Engineers Planning Division 202.761.0115. Visit www.usace.army.mil
for details.
The Wetlands Reserve Program (USDA)
The Wetlands Reserve Program is a voluntary program offering
landowners the opportunity to protect, restore, and enhance
wetlands on their property. The USDA Natural Resources Conservation
Service (NRCS) provides technical support to help landowners
with their wetland efforts. The NRCS goal is to achieve the
greatest wetland functions and values, along with optimum
wildlife habitat, on every acre enrolled in the program. This
program offers landowners an opportunity to establish long-term
conservation and wildlife practices and protection beyond
that which can be obtained through any other USDA program.

National Fish and Wildlife Foundation Challenge Grants
These grants are awarded for projects that address priority
actions to protect fish and wildlife and the habitats upon
which they depend. Federal, state, and local governments,
educational institutions, and nonprofit organizations are
encouraged to apply. Visit www.nfwf.org/programs/grant_apply.htm
for grant guidelines.
Association of Small Foundations
The Association of Small Foundations was formed to provide
information and assistance related to quality philanthropy
to those offices having five or fewer persons and a portfolio
that includes all aspects of foundation work (letter writing,
cutting checks, mailing and processing grant applications,
etc.) For more information, visit http://www.smallfoundations.org/index.htm.
