Exploring Appalachia

Highlander Center
Highlander has been active in Appalachia and the South since its founding in 1932 as the Highlander Folk School. Throughout its 69-year history, the Highlander Center has been dedicated to eliminating poverty and winning the right to genuine and meaningful democratic participation for all people. In pursuit of this goal, Highlander provides support to grassroots individuals and organizations working to address the profound inequities that are so deeply rooted in the political and economic structures and culture of Southern communities. It seeks to create educational experiences that empower people to take democratic leadership towards fundamental change. http://www.hrec.org/.

Fur Peace Ranch
Conceived in 1989 by Jorma Kaukonen (of Jefferson Airplane fame) and his wife Vanessa, The Fur Peace Ranch is nestled in the rolling foothills of southeast Ohio. A seasonal instructional facility, year round restaurant, concert hall and conference center - The Fur Peace Ranch is a positive place to better explore the potential of your favorite instrument and to learn from and listen to some great musicians. To learn about the Ranch activities or to apply for a workshop, visit Jorma's website at http://www.furpeaceranch.com/.
