Ohio Biological Criteria and Habitat Assessment Training
Ohio EPA’s Division of Surface Water will be holding
several two-day training sessions designed to cover the information
and procedures needed in order to understand fish community
assessment (IBI, Miwb) and macroinvertebrate community assessment
(ICI), and the procedures to complete a stream habitat analysis
(QHEI), and explore how use designation determinations are
made. The training will consist of lecture and field demonstrations.

10th Annual National Nonpoint Source Monitoring Workshop
This year’s workshop is titled “Monitoring and
Modeling from the Peaks to the Prairies.” The workshop
offers a great opportunity to share accomplishments and ideas
in nonpoint source monitoring and modeling in a beautiful
setting: autumn in the Rockies. The focus will be on the
outcomes of Section 319 National Monitoring Program projects
and similar innovative efforts. The agenda includes three
days of technical sessions and presentations. A one-day field
trip will feature stream restoration and legacy mines along
with other local technical tours. Session topics include:
stream restoration; NPS modeling; BMP implementation and
evaluation in agriculture, silviculture, and urban construction;
TMDL development; and public information and education. For

Workshop on the Land Use/Water Quality Link
This workshop will be part of the ninth annual Virginia Watershed
Management Conference conducted by the Virginia Department
of Conservation and Recreation, and will be held at the Hotel
Roanoke, September 25-27. It is designed for land use decision
makers and will help inform them about the linkages between
land use decisions, growth management, water quality and
quality of life, as well as provide resources and tools to
shape policies and implement land use practices that are
protective of water resources. Two case studies will be featured
that highlight local challenges and relevant lessons learned.

COVERTS Project
The Ohio COVERTS Project is a volunteer educational outreach
program on the topic of Forest Wildlife Management. The goal
of COVERTS is to improve wildlife habitat through good forest
management practices. Some of the sessions that will take
place at COVERTS include: wildlife habitat, ecology, tree
and shrub identification, woodland management, and outreach
opportunities. Successful applicants attend a 2 ½ day
seminar free of charge. The sessions will take place at Canter’s
Cave 4-H Camp in Jackson, Ohio. For more information, go

The Kalamazoo Community Foundation is hosting a Sustainable
Community Watershed Conference on September 30 from
11:30 AM to 6:30 PM at Sherman Lake YMCA Outdoor Center.
It is
entitled Greener Growth: Integrating Natural Systems into
Site Development. The featured presenter is Randall Arendt,
a land-use planner, site designer, author, lecturer, and
advocate of “conservation planning.” There will
also be a panel discussion and another presentation by Dustin
New of J.F. New & Associates on the use of natural systems
in the management of storm and waste water. Those interested

The VA Natural Resources Leadership Institute involves six
three-day workshop sessions for anyone involved with or has
stake in any aspect of Virginia’s natural resources.

On October 18, National Water Monitoring Day will celebrate
the 30th anniversary of the Clean Water Act. If you have
monitoring scheduled on that date, please take a look at
http://www.yearofcleanwater.org and register your monitoring
sites. This anniversary presents an excellent opportunity
to enhance public appreciation for the importance of our
water resources, to celebrate water quality improvements,
and to rekindle the public stewardship ethic and support
for watershed programs.
