Volunteer Wetland Monitoring: An Introduction and Resource
Guide
The Wetlands Division of EPA’s Office of Wetlands,
Oceans, and Watershed (OWOW) is pleased to announce the release
of its publication, “Volunteer Wetland Monitoring:
An Introduction and Resource Guide” (EPA 843-B-00-001).
This booklet provides an introduction to why and how people
monitor wetlands and includes a multi-page resource guide
to handbooks and manuals that offer detailed information
on wetland monitoring for the layperson. While it is not
a methods manual, the guide also offers advice on approaching
wetland monitoring programs across the United States. For
more information regarding the publication, contact Kathleen
Kutschenreuter (202.566.1383). Copies may be obtained from
the Wetlands Helpline at 800.832.7828.
The Farm as Natural Habitat: Reconnecting Food System with
Ecosystems
This new book by the Land Stewardship Project’s Agroecology
Program is available from Island Press. Contributors to this
collection of writings promote the idea that the restoration
of a relationship between farming and the natural world enhances
the sustainability of both. Rejecting the idea that “ecological
sacrifice zones” are a necessary part of feeding a
hungry world, the book offers compelling examples of an alternative
agriculture that can produce not only healthful food, but
also fully functioning ecosystems and abundant populations
of native species. To order this 250-page book, go to www.islandpress.org and click on the “Spring ’02 Catalog.” You
can also order from the publisher by calling toll free 1.800.828.1302.
