Remote Sensing Technician, Canaan Valley Institute
The Canaan Valley Institute is looking to hire a remote sensing technician to work in its science and technology team headquartered in Thomas, WV, with travel throughout the Mid-Atlantic Highlands region required. Job duties will entail management of the technical side of data acquisition with an airborne hyperspectral remote sensing system, including installation of the sensing system on an airplane, planning aerial missions, running the sensors during flight, and data processing, rendering the data usable for analysis. The technician may also take part in field collection and GIS analysis. Recommended qualifications are a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, including environmental science, geography, forestry, computer science, or engineering, at least one year of professional experience or graduate study, and a background in GIS and remote sensing. A driver’s license is a requirement. Teacher-Naturalist, Burgundy Center for Wildlife Studies Summer Camp
The Burgundy Center Summer Camp in Capon Bridge, West Virginia, is seeking an environmental topics teacher at their summer camp. Duties include creating and teaching workshops, leading nature hikes, and other miscellaneous duties. Qualifications include knowledge of topics to be covered, teaching ability, Wilderness First Aid and CPR training, with an age of 19+ and/or a Lifesaving certificate preferred. Pay range is from $325-$1300, depending on length of employment, plus room and board. The employment season is from June 18-August 24. Trail Crew Staff and Ridgerunner/Caretaker Positions, Appalachian Trail Conference
The Appalachian Trail Conference is looking for 14 seasonal paid staff to manage volunteer trail crews and 20 seasonal Ridgerunner/Caretakers. Volunteer trail crews work on trail construction, maintenance and restoration, and work with local agencies on resource-management projects. Crew positions are available in ME, VT, PA, VA and TN, with varying seasons depending on the region between mid-April and mid-October. Camp Coordinator, Crew Leader and Assistant Crew Leader positions are open. Ridgerunner/Caretakers work as ambassadors of the trail, encouraging safe and responsible behavior on the part of hikers and enlisting the support of trail neighbors. Positions are in GA, VA, MD, PA, NJ, and MN and seasons fall between March and October. Environmental Scientists and Environmental Protection Specialists, U.S. EPA
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is currently hiring environmental scientists and environmental protection specialists for the Office of Research and Development (ORD), Office of Science Policy (OSP), Program Support Staff (PSS), Air Media Team, in Washington, D.C. The job entails working with the air program office in air toxin regulation and policy to verify that regulatory decisions and studies have strong scientific underpinnings. The main focus is execution of the “residual risk” requirements of the Clean Air Act (Section 112(f)). Also in the job description is work on National Air Toxics Assessments, Maximum Achievable Control Technology Standards, and mobile source and indoor air toxics. Specific duties include administration of teams of scientists to produce recommendations on air toxics issues for various parties. Qualifications include excellent communications skills, the ability to work in groups, and an education and experience in the sciences or engineering commensurate to the positions available. Knowledge of toxicology, epidemiology, exposure assessment, and/or risk assessment is preferred. Salary $46,469-$86,095, depending on qualifications. Regional Manager, Potomac Watershed, State of Virginia
A Regional Watershed Manager is needed by the state of Virginia’s Division of Soil and Water Conservation for the Department of Recreation’s soil and water conservation programs. DCR is the state’s primary nonpoint source pollution control agency, and as the Regional Manager the successful candidate for this job will be in charge of local implementation of nonpoint source programs, including sediment control, stormwater management, agricultural runoff policies, and other projects. The job also calls for the manager to be the spokesperson and lead representative for the Department’s interactions with local interests, community organizations, and soil and water conservation districts. At least a bachelor’s degree in natural resource planning/management or a related area, or training in said areas. Experience a plus. A master’s degree is preferred and may stand in for some lack of experience. The job is in Warrenton, Virginia, and the starting salary is $40,000-$55,000. Open until filled.
