Legislative Assistant, Earthjustice
Earthjustice, the nation’s largest nonprofit environmental
law firm, is seeking to hire a legislative assistant to work
with a team of lobbyists on environmental issues including
forest management, endangered species and clean water. Job
tasks include administrative duties, research, technical
editing and advocacy. Salary range is in the upper twenties,

Outreach Director, Kentucky Waterways Alliance
The Kentucky Waterways Alliance, a state-wide nonprofit watershed
protection and restoration group, is looking for an Outreach
Director to administer its membership and outreach work.
The Outreach Director will be responsible for developing
and leading the Membership Program, including working to
increase the membership base, developing donor programs,
and development and maintenance of a membership database.
The Director will also be required to assist with fundraising,
including grant program development, and the implementation
of a media outreach program. Starting salary is $25,000-$30,000/year,
negotiable depending on qualifications. The post is contractual,
with the possibility for employee status, including benefits,

Paid Internships, Student Conservation Association Three
Rivers
Interns for this SCA program will work under the Southwestern
Pennsylvania Watershed Association with several watershed
organizations across Western Pennsylvania. Interns will work
with community members from towns to medium-sized cities.
Projects include recruiting of volunteers and the creation
of volunteer events, planning and running community education
programs, raising media attention for watershed association
projects, and working with watershed specialists on a range
of issues. Training will be provided by several sponsoring
organizations and agencies in watershed education, conducting
meetings, and other valuable skills. Applicants should have
coursework or other experience in science and education,
and media or management training is helpful. The internship
will run from May 31, 2003 - April 30, 2004 (flexible), and
comes with a varying level of compensation, depending on
the specific assignment. AmeriCorps award is available. To

Program Analyst/Environmental Policy Specialist, National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
The National Oceanic And Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
has a an opening in its Damage Assessment Center (DAC) for
a program analyst or environmental policy specialist. This
is a temporary position, lasting one year with a possibility
of being renewed for two more years. The position will entail
legislative activities, including monitoring proposed legislation
relevant to the DAC and formulating agency responses. The
job will also involve participation in DAC program initiatives,
the NOAA strategic planning process, and primary responsibility
for internal program reporting. The minimum job requirements
include an undergraduate or graduate degree in public policy,
political science, environmental studies, or similar field.
The salary is from $35,000-$55,000 per year, depending on

Summer Watershed Internships, Office of Surface Mining (OSM)
The Office of Surface Mining is accepting applications for
summer interns who will work with organizations working to
restore abandoned coal mine lands that have acid mine drainage
and/or other environmental concerns. Internships are available
for undergraduate and graduate students working in environmental
and civil engineering, biological studies, and other environmental
fields of study and reclamation programs. Internships are
available in the following states: Ohio, West Virginia, Tennessee,
Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Alabama, Maryland, Virginia, Indiana,
Oklahoma, Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri. The OSM provides
grants to organizations in these states to hire watershed
interns to work on AMD cleanup. Potential projects for internship
focus include watershed monitoring, grant writing, community
education and involvement programs, and passive AMD remediation
system design. Each full-time internship is for a term of
twelve weeks, starting between May 1 and mid-June, and offers
a stipend of $2,000 plus $500 for expenses. Applications
will be examined and internships allotted from March until
