Exploring Appalachia
Appalachian Ginseng Foundation
Ginseng farming and responsible wild ginseng harvesting is
an increasingly important part of the Appalachian economy,
providing a substantial source of income while causing
minimal damage to the environment. The Appalachian Ginseng
Foundation (AGF) is a regional nonprofit organization of
ginseng growers that teaches its members about growth of “virtually
wild Ginseng”, the most valuable cultivated variety,
and how to achieve a viable ginseng business. The AGF offers
services including publications, conferences, and original
research to those interested in this sustainable agricultural
enterprise. For more information, visit their web site
at http://www.a-spi.org/AGF/index.htm
Jonesborough Storytellers Guild
Much of the fabric of Appalachian culture can only be truly
appreciated through its stories. The Jonesborough Storytellers
Guild, located in Jonesborough, Tennessee, is a group whose
members, professional and amateur, are devoted to telling
tales of all sorts through speech, song, and more. Regular
storytelling performances are held in Jonesborough, as well
as an annual storytelling festival, and don’t forget
to visit the Storytelling Store, online or in person, to
purchase books, CD’s, and more!
