Exploring Appalachia
Spotlight on Elizabethton, Tennessee
In 1772, the Watauga Association instituted the first majority-rule
system of American democracy in Elizabethton. The “Articles
of the Watauga Association” created a free independent
government in the area based on modern democratic principles
four years before the writing of the Declaration of Independence.
Visit the site of this historic agreement and experience the
attractions and ambience of this friendly and beautiful town
nestled in the mountains of eastern Tennessee. For more information,
go to the town’s official Web site at www.elizabethton.org
or go to www.tourelizabethton.com
to view a free visitor’s guide and plan your trip.
From June 4-8, 2003, the Elizabethton/Carter County Chamber
of Commerce is sponsoring the Elizabethton Covered Bridge
Celebration. Each evening, concerts will feature bluegrass,
gospel, and other types of music. Craft fairs, a themed “family
day” with kid’s activities, clog dancing, and
a variety of other events are planned for the celebration,
all centered around Elizabethton’s historic covered
bridge. To learn more, go to http://www.tourelizabethton.com/CBCelebration2003.html
