Featured Watershed Group
Raccoon Creek Watershed Project
In the 1980's, a group of citizens in Gallia County, Ohio,
started a group to address concerns about acid mine drainage
and other water quality issues in the Raccoon Creek watershed,
which flows through much of Southeast Ohio to the Ohio River.
The Raccoon Creek Improvement Committee worked throughout
the '80s on grassroots watershed projects, but realized that
to truly change the picture they needed to think on a larger
scale. The result, formed in the 1990's and including citizens
from all six counties encompassed by the watershed, was the
Raccoon Creek Watershed project. The RCIC has formed partnerships
with the Ohio EPA, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Ohio
University, Mead Paper, Rural Action, and other organizations
providing funding, advice, and technical assistance for ongoing
water quality projects including environmental education,
acid mine drainage remediation, and greenways protection.
The group recently completed a comprehensive watershed management
plan, which is now available in .PDF format at their web site.
