Environmental Justice
and the Monday Creek Watershed
This
case study of the Monday
Creek Watershed examines the inclusion of the Appalachian
watershed in a wider discussion of environmental justice.
Environmental justice articulates that all Americans, regardless
of race or income level, have the right to a clean, safe
environment. The communities of the Monday Creek Watershed,
located in Ohio Appalachia, struggle with environmental,
social and economic problems resulting from a 180-year history
of coal mining.
This article includes interviews of a small
group of local citizens, involved outsiders and political
stakeholders to explore the question of responsibility for
restoration. To what extent should citizens, the government
and coal companies contribute to restore the area? The restoration
process highlights the tension between economic development
and a sustainable environment. Without resources and tools
of access to decision-makers, communities seem to be drawn
into a downward spiral. Environmental justice, as defined
by a set of criteria, seems to include the Monday Creek
Watershed.
