Raccoon Creek Management
Plan
There
are many beautiful areas throughout the Raccoon Creek watershed.
However, acid mine drainage from past coal mining practice,
erosion and sedimentation, and poor sewage and waste disposal
practices plague parts of the creek and its tributaries. ILGARD
at Ohio University, the Raccoon Creek Improvement Committee,
and other project partners are implementing a grant from the
Ohio EPA to develop a comprehensive watershed management plan.
The planning process for this project will involve increasing
public support and involvement to accomplish many objectives.
A comprehensive inventory of the watershed will be done, in
addition to identifying priority problem areas within the
watershed; developing solutions to overcome these problems;
and developing benchmarks and environmental indicators to
measure our progress toward improving water resource quality.
This plan will assist us in prioritizing future restoration
work in the watershed. The input of the Raccoon Creek watershed
community is critical to the development of a sound and accurate
management plan.
