Introduction to ArcView 8.x Workshop

ILGARD offers a three-day course using ArcGIS Desktop 8.x to learn general display and data investigation techniques while learning how to acquire, process and create spatial data layers. By giving a conceptual overview and hands-on experience using the software, this three-day course enables participants to quickly take advantage of ArcGIS Desktop's powerful display and analysis capabilities (using ArcMap, ArcCatalog and ArcToolbox). Students will become familiar with the ArcGIS Desktop 8.x graphical user interface (GUI) and use ArcGIS Desktop 8.x to create, edit, display, query, and analyze geographic and tabular data (including the Personal GeoDatabase), and produce hard copy and digital map products. ArcGIS Desktop 8.x can be used for address matching, site selection, mapping location of sampling locations, permit notification, emergency response coordination, data visualization and analysis, aid in the generation of reports, charts and tables and much more.

Following the training, participants will be able to:

  • Understand what computer mapping is capable of and how it can be used to meet your organizational needs

  • Develop skills to create, edit, display, query and manipulate spatial information

  • Learn to add spatial dimensions to existing data

  • Gain an ability to create top quality data-related maps

This class assumes that the user is proficient with the Windows Operating System, including such tasks as:

  • Navigating the file system using Windows Explorer

  • Creating, deleting, copying and moving files and folders
